Ricerca Artistica Musicale e Ricerca sulle Tecnologie della Musica
Abstract
This chapter addresses the scope and impact of Artistic Research in Music (ARM) as a field of scholarly interest and, more importantly, as a cultural practice of our time. More specifically, it focuses on the scant weight that academic genealogies of ARM accord to developments usually associated with Music Technological Research (MTR), which are neither aligned with simplistic and pervasive technocratic views nor absorbed entirely by engineering issues. Often considered marginal, these experimental MTR practices should instead be seen as expressive of a sharper awareness and competent view of the hyper-technological environments in which music is produced and heard, in late-modern and contemporary societies. Their role in the ARM genealogy and their relevance to current artistic research work should be considered more equally.
