Roque Jacinto de Chavarría’s ¡Fuera, fuera! Háganles lugar
Abstract
Roque Jacinto de Chavarría (1688–1719) was a composer of Hispanic and Amerindian descent who lived and worked in the Viceroyalty of Peru, particularly at the cathedral of La Plata, now called Sucre in present-day Bolivia. His villancico for six voices and continuo, ¡Fuera, fuera! Háganles lugar, is based on a text in which some natives speak in their wobbly Spanish, stuffed with words in local languages.
They came to church to adore the Child Jesus and found that all characters in the manger scene are white; hence their protest. Chavarría’s music does not seem to contain Amerindian influences but bears strong Afro-Peruvian elements, that are identified and discussed here. His composition, taken as a text-plus-music whole, is a major and surprisingly advanced document of the tri-cultural synthesis that Peruvian chapel masters built on the musical models introduced from Spain, as well as on earlier Mexican experiments.
