Temi d’inganno e strutture variabili: John Coltrane e la ricerca della verità permanente
Abstract
We call “deceptive theme” a device used by jazz musicians. It consist in laying down two structures that differ in length and/or chord progression—one for theme statements and another for improvised choruses. Starting from 1962, John Coltrane often made use of deceptive themes, either originals of his or adapted songs, in both tonal and modal contexts. Our analysis shows that Coltrane approached the act of composing and arranging these forms as a work in progress; forms undergo frequent change from date to date, often within a few weeks, or even during a performance. These pieces were short-lived in the band’s book, as Coltrane saw each performance as the temporary result of his tireless search for some elusive truth.
