About Time
Artistic Research and the Contemporary University
Abstract
The contemporary university has been an essential component of the critical debate on the emergence, nature and role of artistic research in the 21st century. However, it has never been acknowledged that universities are now globally permeated by neoliberal managerial practices, with detrimental consequences for the physical and mental well-being of its members, and that, in general, artist-researchers continue to thrive in spite of, rather than because of, the institutional environments and circumstances that today's university offers them. This article takes some initial steps to fill this gap in the literature by considering artistic research on music performance in the context of the contemporary university.
