Abstract

A difficult question of the fourteenth-century poetic-musical repertoire concerns the purpose for which this or that composition has been conceived, and it is of a fundamental importance if we try to contextualize a specific musical composition. Given the almost total absence of information external to the poetic text, it serves as the only point of orientation for our deductions. This article presents a genre in which some compositions could be classified. Among these are the three Latin ballades preserved in the ModA codex — Arte psallentes anexa dulcori by Bartolomeo da Bologna, Veri almi pastoris by Corrado da Pistoia, and Sumite karissimi by Antonio Zaccara da Teramo — which can be defined with the term recommendatio, taken from the ballade Sumite karissimi, namely, works composed by a musician with the aim of displaying his talent and musical ability in order to be hired into the service of a master. Exploration of the circumstances surrounding these three ballades points specifically to the establishment, following the Council of Pisa, of the new papal curia in Tuscany after 26 June 1409, as the most likely context for their composition.
