Reti epistolari e circolazione manoscritta delle rime di Torquato Tasso nei madrigali di Filippo di Monte

Abstract

Studies on the tradition of Torquato Tasso’s Rime have long shed light on the importance of epistolary correspondence for the circulation of his poems, especially when the poet was confined in the asylum of Sant’Anna at Ferrara. A manuscript circulation appears to have been the route of transmission of the Tassian sonnet Negli anni acerbi tuoi purpurea rosa, which the Flemish composer Filippo di Monte sets to music in his XIII libro di madrigali a 5 (1588), with a different incipit and many textual variants. The author argues that this sonnet — along with other manuscript poems by Battista Guarini, Angelo Grillo and Muzio Manfredi and with the anonymous madrigal Onde tanta dolcezza, onde deriva, perhaps by Tasso — may have reached Filippo di Monte through the erudite and bibliophile Gian Vincenzo Pinelli, Monte’s one-time pupil in Naples, or the physician and humanist Girolamo Mercuriale, whom Torquato himself had frequented in Padua, at Pinelli’s house, and with whom he had remained in contact.
