Abstract

The role of the archives is one of the key issues in contemporary ethnomusicological discourse. The development of digital sound and audiovisual media, followed by the rise of the internet, has opened up new opportunities for the use and dissemination of archival recordings, making them, potentially, increasingly valuable sources in today’s musical cultural processes, both in research and performance. However, preserving and enhancing these materials—through media conservation, digitisation, cataloguing, and managing ethical and legal challenges related to access—has proven to be particularly complex and costly for cultural institutions worldwide. As a result, a significant portion of the recordings they hold remains largely unknown and dicult to access. This article examines the current state of sound and audiovisual archives of ethnomusicological interest in Italy, drawing on a nationwide mapping of archives and an in-depth analysis of specific case studies. It provides a concise overview of key aspects of the national landscape, particularly regarding cataloguing, digitization, and access, while also considering the crucial role that economic, technical, and human resources play in these processes. The analysis is accompanied by proposals aimed at fostering development in this field, as well as reections on the relationship between Italian ethnomusicology and archival practices.
