Abstract

Many authors highlight the potential of making music together as a possible way to enhance forms of intercultural understanding and to unlock situations of incommunicability, closure, and discomfort. One wonders, then, whether an approach that is intentionally focused on the active exploration of multicultural musical sources can promote the school and social inclusion of students, developing positive interdependence and reinforcing the skills of relationship and management of interpersonal relationships. A a middle school class, a disciplinary itinerary was proposed that focused on intercultural music education: through choral, instrumental, and choreographic experiences, the students deepened their knowledge of ethnic repertoires. To increase the sense of involvement of the students and further encourage social cohesion and inclusion, the activities were proposed within the frameworks of project-based teaching and cooperative learning. The work was based on a mixed approach that combines techniques of collection, analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data to allow a broader and more multifaceted view of the subject of study. The results confirm the potential of music education aimed at intercultural understanding in school age, as a tool to guide the growth of students towards a more supportive and equitable worldview.
