La salute del musicista: conoscenza e buone pratiche
Keywords:

Intensive musical practice to reach the highest levels of performance involves a considerable biomechanical load; this can lead to the development of musculoskeletal problems, which can interfere with the ability to play one's instrument and thus affect the performance and well-being of musicians. This study explores the muscle stiffness of the upper trapezius in musicians with and without such issues, analyzing possible correlations with their habits and individual characteristics. Sixty musicians from the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland and the Orchestra of Italian Switzerland participated in the research, which was based on questionnaires about lifestyle and musical practice, as well as a measurement of muscle stiffness. 47% of the participants reported musculoskeletal disorders, with a higher prevalence among women and on the left side of the upper trapezius. Although no significant differences emerged between the groups with and without disorders, some correlations were found between muscle stiffness and the perception of effort, disability related to instrumental practice, and quality of life.
This study, being the first to explore muscle stiffness in musicians, highlights the need for further research to better understand these issues and develop effective preventive strategies.
