Abstract

This paper is based on the hypothesis that singing instruction focused on the cultural dimension and an adequate textual understanding of the Italian repertoire can improve the interpretation and expression of Chinese language students, beginners and intermediate level. Most Chinese students, when they study, focus more on technique and neglect the linguistic and cultural aspects, which can significantly influence understanding and expression in singing. This work investigates how a routine based on the correct understanding of texts, their prosody and cultural references can help students from a different linguistic and musical culture develop an interpretation consistent with the repertoire they are dealing with. For this purpose, three students were asked to perform recitatives by Mozart (Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Idomeneo) and Rossini (Tancredi). The results show some improvements in the skills of the female students and suggest the effectiveness of the educational path; at the same time, it is clear that time and effort are two key factors in consolidating progress.
